While we use telemedicine, it is nothing like other telemedicine providers. In a typical, employer-sponsored telemedicine program, plan members are able to conveniently access a random physician by phone or video. Of the approximately 1,500 scenarios that can be handled in a primary care setting, approximately 30 can be safely in a random telemedicine visit.
Within the limited confines of the telemedicine setting, physicians are attempting to address the needs of patients they have never met and will likely never meet again. Beyond the inability to perform more than a phone (sometimes video) based assessment of patient issues, because the visit is a one-time transaction, the physician has no ability to confirm suspicions with testing. So, the utility of the service is limited to only a few diagnoses that can be rendered with near certainty with both hands tied behind the back of the doctor.
An entirely different proposition.
